Getting Started with Performance Management

Assign reviewers and link reviewees

For this, use the Admin and Assign buttons in the top-right corner of the Performance Reviews page.

To get to the Performance Reviews page, go to “Perf. Mgmt” > “See all reviews”

Within “Admin”, you’ll find an option for setting who the reviewers are - Assign is used for linking reviewees to your chosen reviewer.

The headteacher is already a reviewer by default.

Create any whole school targets you'll want to use later

This can be done using the Add New > Whole School Target option on the Performance Reviews page.

When you're ready, write up your target and click Add Target at the bottom of the pop-up.

Any target you add here will be available in a pre-written bank of targets for reviewers to use (it doesn’t necessarily mean this target must be set for every reviewee).

Start the review process by meeting and setting targets

Find a reviewee in “Start” and click Meet or Schedule on the right of the page to begin the review process.

When in someone’s review, click + Existing Target to select from the list of Whole School Targets. Other targets in School that relate to this reviewee may also show in this list in case you want to link them to their review (see FAQs for further details).

Click Add Target to create a new target from scratch.

Take a look at the other areas of the review as needed (these are the sections on the left when within a review):

  • CPD Needs: For recording CPD, this reviewee is due to do this year.

  • Development Feedback: View feedback records for this reviewee.

  • Standards: view any Professional Standard templates completed by this reviewee.

  • Other Evidence: Upload other relevant documents for this review. If you’re getting started for the first time, this is an excellent place to attach the reviewee’s previous review from your old system.

Activate the review

At the bottom of the review page, you can download and view the PDP (“Personal Development Plan”) document to check this.

To activate the review immediately, tick the “Skip feedback and activate PDP” box and click the green “Activate the PDP” button. This will record that both parties “agreed” to the review in the meeting.

Alternatively, leave the box unticked and “Submit for feedback to activate the PDP” - this sends the review document to the reviewee. They then get a period to view this via their account and submit it back as “accurate” or “inaccurate”, along with a comment.

Assuming they say it’s accurate, the review is then activated. If not, the reviewer will be given access to the review again so any necessary amendments can be made before the agreement.

Top tips and FAQs

  1. Can my reviewers “tweak” Whole School Targets when setting them for individual reviewees?

Yes! Once a reviewer has added a WST to a review, that individual’s version of the target can be edited without affecting the Whole School Target or other reviewees' versions.

  1. When trying to add a Whole School Target to someone’s review, why can I see other targets showing up alongside the Whole School Targets?

You may find other targets show alongside your Whole School Targets if they relate to the reviewee in some way - this is particularly likely as you begin using the Planning feature in Perspective.

For example, an “English subject plan” is created with three targets for the English team… if your reviewee is in the English team and you go to “+ Existing Targets”, those three targets will be listed alongside the Whole School Targets, as you may wish to assign them to this reviewee’s review.

A target will show in the list of “Existing Targets” for a review if:

  • The reviewee is responsible for that target.

OR

  • The target is for a team that the reviewee is in.

  1. What do you recommend I put in the different sections of a target?

This is always up to you, and this isn’t prescriptive, but loosely speaking…

Title - clear, not too long. “QofE - Curriculum” is a common format.

Description - the “what” box. Answer the question “What is it we are trying to achieve?” and any other context and detail required to understand the target.

Strategy - the “how” box. “How will we achieve this target?”.

Success criteria - asking, “If this target goes well, what would that look like?” will give you an idea of what these may be.
